Today I’m joined by legendary film composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Sherlock, Hot Fuzz) to talk about one of the more perfect pieces of art ever created, Stevie Wonder’s masterpiece ‘Songs in the Key of Life’.
We talk about Stevie’s ability to conjure joy in art, that time David went to Stevie’s birthday party, which Bond song Stevie almost recorded, how this album influenced David’s work with John Singleton and David’s hopes for a Dolby Atmos mix of the album.
Plus, we also dig into how David chooses films to score, why he turned down The 6th Day, working with John Singleton and Isaac Hayes on scoring Shaft, the solitary life of a composer vs forced lockdown, playing on his own scores, how friend of the show Mark Kermode ended up playing harmonica on the Good Omens score, and I try and emotionally blackmail David into finally making an album under his own name. Please tweet at David after you listen and keep the pressure on for ‘Songs in the Key of Dave’.
